Where Is My Rest?

This has been a tremendously hard year for my family.

In March, we lost my mom. Then in June, my daughter-in-law underwent an emergency C-section at just 29 weeks—it was necessary to save both her life and my grandson’s. By God’s grace, they are both getting stronger every day, and for that, I am deeply grateful.

Still, these life-altering events have left me reeling. They’ve stirred up a spiritual struggle—prompting me to ask hard questions and reevaluate how I live, how I cope, and where I draw my strength. Questions like:

Where is my rest? Where is my strength?

One morning, during a quiet time of reflection, I found myself drawn back to a passage many of us know well:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
— Matthew 11:28–30

A Familiar Passage, A New Understanding

For a long time, I read these verses as an invitation to take a break—to rest, observe the Sabbath, stop pushing so hard. And yes, that’s part of it.

But lately, these words have been asking more of me. They’ve been inviting me not just to stop, but to surrender.

We often wrestle with fear, self-doubt, and striving. Our egos want to be seen, soothed, safe, and secure. And we exhaust ourselves trying to meet the endless demands of that inner voice telling us we’re not enough. That’s the heavy yoke we carry.

But Jesus offers us a different way.

Living From God Instead of For Everything Else

God invites us to stop relying on our own strength and lay our burdens down. True rest doesn’t come from doing less—it comes from trusting more. It’s the difference between living for ourselves, for others, or even for God… and learning to live from the life and strength that is God.

When we live from that place, we begin to understand that we are already deeply loved, already fully seen, already enough.

How Coaching and the Enneagram Can Help

This kind of shift doesn’t always come easily. Naming what weighs us down—and releasing it—can feel overwhelming, especially when we don’t have the tools or clarity to understand what’s driving us.

That’s where coaching or the Enneagram can help.

The Enneagram gives us language for our internal patterns: the fears we try to avoid, the desires we chase, and the false identities we cling to. Coaching helps create space to explore those patterns and move toward a more grounded, grace-filled way of living. These tools don’t fix us—they simply help us see more clearly so we can partner with God in our transformation.
